Climate Connectors at Second Baptist Church West End

Last month, Virginia Interfaith Power & Light (VAIPL) wrapped up the final tree knowledge workshop with another incredible faith partner as part of our mission to Cool the City. Through our Climate Connector program, VAIPL is working to equip congregations with the knowledge and tools to take climate action in their own communities.

We’re excited to celebrate a new team of Climate Connectors from Second Baptist Church West End, who completed all four workshops this spring. Over the course of the program, participants built a strong foundation in urban heat, unequal access to green infrastructure (including trees), and the role that community-led solutions play in creating healthier neighborhoods.

With the workshops complete, the next phase is already underway. In the coming weeks, VAIPL will begin planting fruit trees and large canopy trees around the church’s parking lot — helping to create shade, reduce heat, and transform the space into a cooler, more welcoming environment for the congregation and the surrounding community.
